2012 Matrix Details
The 2012 Matrix comes in a choice of two trims - L and S. Both trims come standard with front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission. Both trims offer an optional four-speed automatic transmission and the S has optional all-wheel drive with a standard four-speed automatic transmission.
The L has a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque.
This trim has an EPA estimated fuel economy of 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for the manual and 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for the automatic.
The S is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel drive S with a manual transmission has an EPA estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway and with an automatic transmission gets 21mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drive version is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
2012 Matrix Safety and Features
The 2012 Toyota Matrix comes standard with enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock disc brakes, brake assist, smart stop technology, electronic brake-force distribution, active front head restraints, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags.
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety rated the Matrix with the highest score of "Good" on frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not tested this vehicle yet.
The Matrix has a lot of cargo space - 19.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 49.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, or a maximum of 61.5 cubic feet when the front passenger seat is also folded flat.
